Description
A daily anti-ageing food supplement to enhance beauty from within and maintain nail and hair strength. Each capsule is formulated with Vitamin C and Selenium plus Marine Collagen, Freeze Dried Manuka Honey, Hyaluronic Acid & Royal Jelly Extract. Collagen Queen is an ideal way to replace the collagen lost during and after the menopause. Marine collagen in particular has been proven in clinical trials to improve skin smoothness and reduce wrinkles.
The Mānuka honey is sourced from our very own Manuka Doctor hives nestled in the luscious green mountains of New Zealand. The honey is freeze dried into powder form and added to our formula which is lovingly made in the UK to the very highest standard. The MGO (methylglyoxal) level in Mānuka Honey is derived from DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which is naturally present in the nectar of the Mānuka Bush.
Why it works
Manuka Plus Collagen Queen is packed with ingredients that may support your skin, bone, hair and nail health, plus the growth and development of collagen – the most plentiful protein in our bodies, and the building blocks that make up much of your body tissues, including blood vessels, cartilage and skin. Collagen provides the structure that holds our bodies together, ensures skin elasticity and protects your organs – but as we get older, our bodies make less than before. [1] Read on for a spotlight on the ingredients in Manuka Plus Collagen Queen:
Mañuka honey (MGO 300)
This high-strength honey – made by bees collecting nectar from New Zealand Mañuka bushes – contains the active ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO), which has an antimicrobial [2] and also antibacterial effect on the body, according to a 2018 study by Ulster University. [3] Our Mañuka honey is harvested from Manuka Doctor hives high in the New Zealand mountains, and then freeze-dried into powder.
Vitamin C
This nutrient plays an important role in making the collagen needed for our skin, blood vessels, cartilage, bones, gums and teeth, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). [4]
Wondering how? A 2017 study by New Zealand’s University of Otago reported that vitamin C activates enzymes involved in producing collagen in the body, while also scavenging excess free radicals, for example from UV radiation, that can damage skin cells and lead to premature ageing. [5]
Selenium
A trace mineral found in a range of food including Brazil nuts, fish, seafood, meat and wholegrains, [6] selenium is important for healthy hair and nails – in fact, the EFSA says a deficiency is linked to thin hair, alopecia and nail disorders. [7]
Like vitamin C, selenium is an important antioxidant, which means it protects cells from oxidative stress by neutralising free radicals, for example from ultra-violet radiation. USA’s Linus Pauling Institute reported that selenium protects the skin by increasing the activity of certain enzymes – so boosting the antioxidant defence of the skin. [8]
Responsibly-sourced marine collagen
It’s been shown that collagen supplements may bolster the body’s supplies of collagen. After digestion in the gut, collagen supplements are transported around the bloodstream and then laid down in cartilage and other body tissues, according to a 2018 US review. [9]
The researchers reported that marine collagen – which is a natural collagen extracted from fish skin – can improve smoothness of skin and reduce wrinkles. Collagen has also been found to improve skin elasticity, increase nail growth and reduce nail splitting. [10]
Hyaluronic acid
This is a polysaccharide that’s produced naturally by your body, and it plays a key role in helping your skin hang onto water – keeping it moisturised. But as we age, our bodies’ production of hyaluronic acid slows, particularly in the outer layers of the skin. [11]
A 2018 analysis in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules reported that skin products containing hyaluronic acid improved moisture levels in the skin, and stimulated collagen and elastin to improve skin elasticity. [12]
Royal Jelly
Manuka Plus Collagen Queen contains royal jelly, a substance produced by bees to feed the queen bee. A 2011 Korean study found that royal jelly helped increase collagen production on human cells in laboratory tests. But more studies are needed. [13]
