January is the time of year when most of us re-evaluate our healthcare regime – this has proved particularly relevant for those in their 40’s and 50’s. A recent study published in the journal Population Studies, compared generations born between 1945 and 1980 and found a greater prevalence of ill health among those born later and who were likely to rate their health as poor.(1)

For some, getting all the essential vitamins and minerals into our diet is not as easy as it looks. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins is the best way to get all your daily nutritional requirements but it’s not always easy to include these in your diet all the time. A study published in Nutrition Journal found that while a varied diet is the best source of essential vitamins and minerals, a multivitamin may help fill in any small but critical nutritional gaps that could otherwise lead to deficiencies (2).

Manuka Doctor’s Meno-Hive supplements contain all of the essential vitamins and minerals for ages 40 plus.

As we age, changes in the body can lead to nutritional deficiencies, particularly Vitamin B12 absorption (3). Vitamin B12 is essential for energy yielding metabolism and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It also contributes to the normal function of the nervous and immune system. This is particularly true for women going through the peri menopause, those that are menopausal and post menopausal. Manuka Doctor’s multi vitamin Meno-Hive not only contains B12 to help with menopause fatigue, it also contains Biotin, Copper and B6 to help release energy and reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Those that follow a plant based diet should also be very mindful of their nutrient intake as Vitamin B12 is found primarily in animal foods, so are at a higher risk of deficiency of this important vitamin.

Vegetarians or Vegans may also lack Calcium, Zinc, Iron, Vitamin D, and Omega-3 fatty acids (4,5), so it’s important to supplement a meat free diet with these essential vitamins and minerals.

“So glad I came across this multi vit from Manuka Doctor, my meat free diet means I’m lacking in certain vitamins and minerals but Meno-Hive gives me everything I need to be in great health. Thank you Manuka Doctor!”

As we age, bodies require more Calcium and Vitamin D (6). Vitamin D works to slow down and minimise weakening bones and has been proven in clinical trials to maintain healthy bones (EFSA). If you do not get enough vitamin D, you are at greater risk of bone loss and broken bones as your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium (7). This is particularly relevant for those going through the menopause or who are post menopausal as Vitamin D is crucial for bone health.

The average daily vitamin D intake in the UK is currently far below the Reference Nutritional Intake of 400 IU per day and it is estimated that 20% of adults and up to 16% of children in the UK are deficient (8). It can be difficult to find vitamin D in dietary sources – with the main source of the vitamin being exposure of skin to the sunlight and today there are many contributing factors to vitamin D deficiency. This includes using sunscreen to block the sunlight, air pollution, wearing long-length clothing and generally staying indoors a lot of the time. One of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies in the world is a lack of iron. We need iron to help produce the red blood cells that transport oxygen around our bodies. Symptoms of an iron deficiency include fatigue, weakness and anaemia and according to the World Health Organisation, around 30% of people worldwide are anaemic due to an iron deficiency. A multivitamin supplement will include the right amount of iron to help plug any gaps in our diet. (9) You will find 100% of your iron daily requirement in our Meno-Hive capsules.

Other people who may benefit from multivitamins include those on low calorie diets, or who don’t get enough nutrients from food alone (10). A good quality multivitamin should contain a whole range of micronutrients that our bodies need for normal functioning and repair, from vitamin A right through to Zinc.
