Boxing Nutrition: Take This Manuka Honey Tonic Every Day

George Lockhart is an American Nutritionist who is currently working with World Heavyweight Champion boxer Tyson Fury.

In this blog he explains why a Manuka honey tonic, taken every morning, has formed the basis of the training camp’s nutritional routine.

George says:

“In my view, doing simple things consistently is the only way to get results.

And when you’re in charge of nutrition like I am, fight camp is just as much about prehab as it is rehab.

Hard training really can hit the immune system, that’s why every morning I am giving the team of Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker and Tommy Fury a basic immune boosting drink with Manuka honey.

It takes me less than a minute to make, tastes great, and helps everything from immunity to digestion.

Manuka honey has higher anti-microbial properties than other types of honey. Which means that it has the ability to kill certain types of bacteria. These properties come from high levels of Methylglyoxal in Manuka honey, which is written as MGO for short.

So put simply, the higher the MGO number, the more bacterial killing properties the honey has.

Every morning here’s my healthy and natural drink, I call it my Immunity Booster:

George Lockhart's Manuka Honey Tonic

Spoon 1 tablespoon full of Manuka Doctor Honey into a mug or glass. Right now I’m using the 220 grade Monofloral honey which tastes amazing but you could use whichever grade you have in the cupboard.

Next add 2 tablespoons full of Apple Cider Vinegar.

Next I add half a tablespoon of Turmeric powder. You could also grate fresh turmeric but for me, the powder works just as well.

Then I cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice in. Just make sure the pips are out first!

Finally, add about 1 and a-half cups of hot water. I always let the boiling water cool down before I make this up, as if the water is scorching hot and at boiling point it could damage the natural properties of the Manuka honey.

Then all that’s left is for you to stir it up and drink the whole thing.

The natural sweetness of the honey, combined with the light spice of the turmeric and Apple Cider Vinegar gives you a healthy drink which is tasty and good for you too.
